Brief History

Purpose of our Ministry

As a dynamic, vibrant and growing Church proclaiming the Word of God we purpose, "To Meet the Total Need of Man" and go about making disciples of Christ by:

Attracting and leading the unsaved to Christ.

Encouraging saints to consecrate themselves to God's Purpose in their lives.

Providing a climate in which personal spiritual growth, nurturing, mentoring and worship occur.

Equipping believers for effective ministry to reach the Inglewood area and beyond.

Philosophy of our Ministry

Each member is to become totally committed to saving of souls and up building of the church ministries.

Each member will be actively involved in at least one auxiliary.

All auxiliaries are involved in evangelism.

Bishop Young takes leadership in prayer, preaching, teaching, identifying leaders, nurturing, mentoring and training leaders for the work of the ministry and edifying of the saints.

Brief HistoryIt was in the year of our Lord, 1982, when God directed Pastor, Elder Johnny Jasper Young, at age 31, to begin pastoral ministry in Carson, California at 1129 Dominguez Street, Suite J. September 5, 1982 was the grand opening! On October 17, 1982, Bishop Willie K. Mallard gave the Dedicatory Service Message. This church was the fifth sister church in California of the ecclesiastical body of The Church of God Pentecostal, Incorporated; headquarters in Mobile, Alabama where Bishop E.D. Davis is the Founder and Chief Apostle.First lady Brenda, sons, Jarvis and Jonathan comprised the First Family. The late Overseer A.M. Turner, who pioneered the first Church of God Pentecostal in California became a member of this church in Carson in 1982. He, along with Mother Louise Turner-Brown, were some of the charter members. Missionary Jessie Moore, who brought the first message in the first established Church of God Pentecostal in California, became one of the charter members along with her husband Deacon Thelman Moore. In January 1983, Overseer A.M. Turner went home to be with the Lord.As we continued to grow the following ministries were added to the church: Brother Horace McGregory Young, 1st Custodian; Minister Sylvester Moore, 1st Assistant Pastor; Sister Rosie Young, 1st Secretary; Deacon Thelman Moore, 1st Deacon Chairman; Deacon Lewis Bailey, 1st Treasurer; Missionary Jessie Moore, 1st Women’s Supervisor; Mother Louise Turner-Brown, 1st Mother’s Board President; Sister Mary Bailey, 1st Youth President; Sister Frances Anthony, 1st Choir President; Sister Geraldine Young, 1st Usher Board President; Sister Diane Ramsey, 1st Church Announcer; Elder Anthony Baker, 1st Church Organist; Sister Claudette Burpo-Baker, 1st Choir Directress; Sister Ruby Brown, 1st Pastor’s Aide Committee President; Mother Dorothy Jones, 1st Adult Sunday School Teacher; Brother Charles Jones, 1st Church Drummer.On February 18, 1984, Minister Sylvester Moore, our Assistant Pastor, went home to be with the Lord. One month later, March 1984, Missionary Mattie Young-Conerly came over to encourage our church family. It was at that time she prophesied that God would move us to a larger church facility within six months.On August 5, 1984 (5 months later), our church moved to 733 South Grevillea Avenue in Inglewood, California (corner of Grevillea and Buckthorn). A motorcade from Carson to Inglewood was held. With less than twenty members, we raised over $70,000.00 within six months for part of the down payment on the new church property. Deacon and Sister Thelman Moore were inspired by God to loan the church the remaining $75,000.00 for our down payment. It was indeed a “Miracle in the house”!In late August of 1984, our dear Mother Corine Holmes departed this life to be with the Lord. Shortly after that time in October of 1985, one of Mother Holmes’ daughters, Sister Edna Bishop, initiated our first Radio Broadcast on KTYM 1460 of Inglewood. The Lord was continuing to bless, as more ministries were added: Sister Eula Cotton, 1st Missionary Department President; Sister Edna Bishop, 1st Young Women’s Christian Council President; Sister Gwendolyn McNeal, 1st Trustee Board President; Elder Eligah Davis, 1st Director of Youth Ministries; Elder Frederick Walker, 1st Director of Christian Education.It was on November 23, 1985 when the first Appreciation was given for the Pastor and Wife. April 13, 1986 the Memorial Library was dedicated in memory of our late Assistant Pastor, Minister Sylvester Moore. Also in 1986, the third week of May was declared Annual Founders Appreciation. On November 29, 1986 the Installation Dinner for our full-time Pastor, Elder Johnny J. Young, was held at the Pacifica Hotel in Culver City, California. Sister Cynthia Moore-Oliver served as chairperson of this elegant affair. Pastor John Vincent, Jr. of Tulsa, Oklahoma (who was our pioneer Revivalist for the first several years of ministry), was the keynote speaker. On December 19, 1986, Pastor Young, by faith, left his career as Administrator from Inglewood Unified School District, to become full-time Pastor.In 1986, our 5:00 a.m. early morning prayer ministry began. One year later, January 1987, the church sent the Pastor and family to Honolulu, Hawaii for vacation, spearheaded by the Installation Committee. During that same month, January 1987, our church hired its first full-time Administrative Secretary and part-time Facility Manager. Later that year, November 8, 1987, we celebrated “The Year of Victory” in paying off our second trust deed, where a Mortgage Burning Ceremony was held on this date. In October of 1988, another one of our dear charter mothers, Mother Willie Mae Guest, went home to be with the Lord.In September of 1989, we began our Inland Empire Bible Study (Moreno Valley and Riverside). One year later, September 1990, a Head Start Pre-School program was instituted here at the Church of God Pentecostal. In March of 1991, Ministerial Training Institute classes began. The first graduating class of “MTI” was recognized in June of 1992. A few years later, February 1995, “MTI” received seven years of accreditation from the Accrediting Commission International based in Beebe, Arkansas.As we continued to reach and move toward higher heights, in 1996, we began to have two morning worship services (7:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m.). We also housed the first University of California at Los Angeles after school tutorial program, spearheaded by Mr. Edmond Harris, aimed to assist high school minorities and help them prepare for the UC system after graduating from high school. In 1997 our COGP-Community Development Services Corporation was formed. The first major project was the construction of the Charles E. Campbell Senior Villas located at 612 South Walnut Avenue in Inglewood, California. We later acquired the property across the street for the church facility located at 100 West Buckthorn Street. This property is currently used for temporary shelter for low income families.As we entered into the 21st century our church continued to expand in the community and Kingdom of God by adding more ministries to the church: Silent Praise Dancers, Positive Singles Adult Living Ministry (PSALM), Media Relations / Technology, Prayer Phone-Line ministry.On August 19, 2006 our Senior Pastor, Bishop Johnny J. Young, was unanimously appointed by the Chief Apostle – Bishop E.D. Davis and the entire National Council to become the Senior Presiding Bishop of The Church of God Pentecostal, Incorporated. On August 11, 2007, during our 55th International Holy Convocation, an official inaugural investiture banquet was held at the Mobile Convention Center (Mobile, Alabama) in public celebration for the installation of Senior Bishop Johnny J. Young.From 1982 until now, various activities have taken place, many souls have been saved, healed, delivered and set free! Signs, wonders and miracles have occurred. Our goal is to increase our membership to over 1,500 souls by the end of this year! The bible lets us know that one person has influence over 1,000 people and two people can influence over 10,000 souls! We can start by everyone winning one!

Confession of Faith
I'm now releasing my faith, by confessing this to be the greatest day of my life. This is the day that the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it. I am a recreated being, "Old things have passed away and all things have become new." I am created into His glorious image and likeness: I am His workmanship and I am complete in Christ, I am full of His Spirit and divine power, I am God's property. I have been bought with the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, I am free from the curse of the law. Sin..Sickness..Poverty..Fear..Doubt..Worry..Confusion..and all that Satan represents, shall not have any dominon over me. I am prospering in my spirit, my soul, my body, and my finances, for I am a liberated person. Jesus said, that I would know the truth and the truth would make me free.I am standing fast, in the liberty wherein Christ has made me free. I am expecting God to meet all my needs, and to do super abundantly above all I dare to ask, hope, dream or desire in every area of my life. I speak directly to every mountain of satanic adversity in my life and command them to go! They cannot stand! They must go in Jesus Name! Through the abundance of God's grace, I have received the gift of righteousness. For I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.Praise the Lord! I am now reigning in this life by Christ Jesus. Today, I worship Him with all my heart, soul and strength. I lift up my voice and my hands, in praises and adoration to His glorious name for He is worthy of praise, and He has made me worthy to praise His name!

Bishop Johnny Young As a child, Bishop Young had a great love for the Church and school. During the summer months, he spent much of his leisure time playing the teacher and preacher. He served as Church custodian for fifty cents per week until his teenage years when his stipend was increased to $1.00 and later to $2.00 per week. He played the drums for the Church as well as both the drums and trombone in his High School Band. He was an honor student and was perfect in attendance for eight out of twelve years in the first through the twelfth grades. Also, as a lad, he sold “GRITS” papers in the community and participated in Summer Correspondence Bible courses and Vacation Bible School.In his late teens, he developed and cultivated his own cotton farm aside from the joint family farm. He also assisted others in the community with their cotton and corn farms.Bishop Johnny J. Young received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry from Alabama State University in 1973. He received his Master of Arts degree in Education and Counseling from California State University - Dominguez Hills in June of 1978. Further advanced studies were taken at Meharry Medical College, UCLA, and Mills College.Bishop Young graduated from Marengo High School in Dixons Mills, Alabama as class Salutatorian in 1969. He attended Meharry Medical College in Tennessee in 1971-72 on two summers Biomedical Fellowships. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology & Chemistry in 1973 from Alabama State University. He performed graduate work in Genetics and Counseling at UCLA and California State University Long Beach in 1974-77. In 1978, he earned a Master of Arts in Education & Counseling from California State University Dominguez Hills. In 1982, he received Administrative Credentials from California State University – Dominguez Hills. It was in 1991 when he received a Doctor of Ministry degree from Friends International University in Merced, California and a Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Education in 1995 from Ministerial Training Institute in Inglewood, California.In 1991, he became Founder and Chancellor of Ministerial Training Institute where he also serves as one of the key Professors. This Institute is now a fully accredited International Bible College! Bishop Young was called into Pastoral Ministry by the divine directions from God. In 1982, he began pastoring in a storefront in Carson, California with his wife, Brenda Davis-Young; and two sons, Jarvis and Jonathan. Later many other souls were united with the ministry. The Pastoral Ministry moved to present location: 733 South Grevillea Avenue in Inglewood, California with approximately 20 dedicated members in 1984. This full block of property, which cost about one-half million dollars, was purchased with these faithful members. In 1986, by divine orders from God, Pastor resigned from the Inglewood Unified School District, (as he was getting ready for another promotion in the district!), to become full-time Pastor by FAITH, with no salary! God has truly sustained what He ordained!He enjoys traveling with his family, visiting his hometown (Dixons Mills, AL), preaching and teaching the word of God! His completeness comes from God, his Family, his Parishioners, Relatives, Friends and Fellow Associates.Bishop Young’s main goal is to endeavor to do the perfect will of God! In 1995, he authored his first book entitled: "Shut-Up & Pray!” What makes Bishop Young a hero of our times is that he remains faithful and dedicated to each endeavor he undertakes. His additional attributes and contributions include: Served as the President of the Inglewood Area Minister Association (1992-1996); Served as the principal of the Inglewood Community Tutorial program (1994-1999);Served on Racial Relations committee with Steve Thom in Los Angeles Unified School District and Inglewood Unified School District (U.S. Justice Department) (1995-1999)Became CEO and President of COGP-Community Services Development Corporation (1996)Serves as IAMA Liaison Chairperson to IUSD Board of Education(1996-2003)Inglewood MLK - Planning committee chairperson of MLK speech contest (1998-present)Elected to the IUSD Board of Education (2003-present)Serves as member of IUSD strategic plan committee (since it's inception)IUSD budget Committee, Education Committee and Ethics CommitteeMember of the Board of Directors of Los Angeles Southwest College FoundationMember of Inglewood YMCA Board of Education; Member of Inglewood Chamber of CommerceLife Member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.Bishop Johnny Jasper Young is truly an outstanding leader and hero of our times.

Dr Brenda Young

Lady Brenda Louise Davis-Young epitomizes elegance in living a saved, sanctified and Holy life set a part from the secular world. She was born into the home of a Pastor, the late founder of The Church of God Pentecostal, Incorporated, Bishop E.D. Davis. She has had the fear of God instilled within her as a young girl maturing to adulthood. Lady Brenda was baptized with the Holy Ghost in June 1968. She has held many offices within the church. As a devout woman who loves the Lord with her "whole heart", she gladly supports her husband in his many endeavors, and shares the same zeal and passion for the ministry of proclaiming God's living word!

Her community involvement includes volunteering as a First-Aid and CPR Instructor, PTSA, Booster Club and a member of Inglewood School District's strategic planning committee.

Lady Brenda received her high school diploma from Mattie T. Blount High School (Prichard, AL) in 1970. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Woman's University (1974), a Health Service Credential from California State University at Los Angeles (1981), a Master in Biblical Counseling from Ministerial Training Institute in Inglewood, CA (1994), a Master of Education with a specialization in School Nursing from Cambridge College in Masschusetts (2006), and a Doctorate in Biblical Counseling from Ministerial Training Institute (1994).

Dr. Brenda Young portrays tremendous strength and endurance in the Lord by jointly sharing the vision and love for God with Bishop Young. Her primary objective in life is to be that "excellent woman of God walking in His divine favour." Her favorite Bible scripture is found in Proverbs 3:5-6 - "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not to thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy path."

This corporation is a Religious Corporation and is not organized for the private gain of any person. It is organized under the Nonprofit Religious Corporation Law exclusively for religious purposes. The specific purpose of this corporation is to provide community social and educational services to the community and to provide decent affordable housing for low and moderate income persons.Plans for Renovation / ConstructionPreliminary Phase IAWe have paid off the Mortgage at 733 South Grevillea. This property values approximately $2.5 million. 612 South Walnut Street Property (Charles E. Campbell Senior Citizen Housing) is paid off. This property's current value is approximately $800,000.00. The approximate cost of construction was approximately $425,000.00.Preliminary Phase IBWe would like to purchase the adjacent block of property to the Church. The front house has already been purchased (805 South Grevillea Avenue). This property is to be used for building K-12 Bishop Young Christian Academy (BYCA). The front 10-room house is presently used for temporary shelter. The approximate appraised value of this house in now $750,000.00. The approximate cost for this block of property is $1M.Preliminary Phase IIWe would like to begin building a Multipurpose Community Youth Center on our church properties. This center is designed to assist our youth in our community with extra curricular activities such as sports, tutorial programs, a latchkey program, a child care center, a substance abuse program, community counseling center, adult education training center, physical fitness, community meetings for all, banquets, concerts, drama and other cultural and spiritual events. This facility will seat 450 Banquet Style and 800 Theater Style to include a drama hydraulic stage.Preliminary Phase IIIThis renovation phase includes increasing our present sanctuary to seat more than 2,000 people, our new business office complex, classrooms for our Christian Academy and Bible College. We need to purchase the property next door to the church ($595,000.00) for this expansion. The estimated cost of this phase is $2 million.
